I tried several oil viscosities in my non revalved 97' TLS forks while doing regular track days & street riding a few years back. Had new Race Tech 85 kg springs in the forks (I'm a midget :^) & tried 10wt., 15wt. & even 20wt. fully synthetic fork oil. The 10wt. definitely felt better than stock, 15wt. felt very nice on the track & good on the street & the 20wt. was just a bit too much for both. I ended up going back to the 15wt. fully synthetic & was running that weight for close to a year & was even considering trying 12.5wt. to see if that would have been a better all around choice. Then I had that fall in Fontana & when putting it all back together I figured having Jim Lindemann just revalve the forks would not be a bad plan.
When setting fork oil levels I went with a level 120mm from the top of the fork as this was recommended to me by a friend who races in the WSMC & is a fellow TLS rider. Note, when using higher viscosity fork oil you will have some difficulty setting the fork oil levels. Getting all the air to bleed out as you refill the forks will take some time. I highly recommend compressing the assembly & pump it, going slowly, then let it sit for awhile & then pumping it some more & letting it sit. Do this rotation several times until you can't feel the air bubbles squirting through the valving & you can't see any more micro bubbles rising out of the fluid. The air bubbles love to sit in that thicker oil & lots of them tend to lurk around. My fork oil levels dropped some 15mm between the first time I changed my fork oil & when I went back in to change the fluid to a higher weight a few months later. I was very carefull when setting the oil levels & the only thing I can attribute this drop to was being a little impatient with the bleeding off of the air trapped in the forks.
If I'm still working for Team Lion Racing when the Fontana AMA round comes up I will run the fork oil level stuff (especially when dealing with nonrevalved forks) by Jim Lindemann to get his feedback on this. We had a few long talks while in the pits & hotpit lane @ Daytona and he is pretty cool & said he wouldn't mind answering suspension related questions from TL owners off this site.
