GoPro HERO4 Black

The HERO4 Black may be long in the tooth, but it's still our pick as the best all-around option. Why? It offers some of the best 4K video quality of any action camera on the market. It is also the lightest and among the smallest 4K capable action cameras out there, and is built nice and tough (though it's not waterproof without a housing). ProTune and Auto Low Light mode give users additional creative control over their footage and GoPro's free editing software, while a little buggy, is powerful and easy to use. And while the unit only has a front-facing LCD, an accessory rear LCD can be had for $80. If you've got the cash and want the best, the HERO4 Black is for you.

 
Best budget-friendly 4K action camera:

Yi 4K

The Yi 4K's footage is not as good as the Sony or GoPro, but it is also not terribly far behind. Audio quality is, unfortunately, frustratingly mediocre. But the Yi 4K offers the best user interface and battery life of any action camera we've tested. The touchscreen is an absolute delight (when not wearing gloves), and while the build quality does not quite match that of the GoPro, once in a waterproof case, the difference is negligible. Simply put, the Yi is likely good enough for a lot of users and a whole lot more affordable than its closest competition.
