Neobyčejný Cafe Racer

Like the 750, the GS1000’s engine was not a design break-through but rather a rugged expression of current practice. And in the area of the chassis, the 1000 was a step forward over the 750, so the idea that chassis and handling were somehow related was gaining ground (at another BIG manufacturer in this period, they were separate departments!). Differences were small but significant – fork tubes a millimeter bigger than the competition, swingarm beams a little heftier. Torsional stiffness of tubes rises as the 4th power of diameter, so a change from a 35-mm tube to 36 could increase stiffness by 12%. Suzuki was meanwhile making parallel changes in the chassis of their 500 GP bike.
