První dojmy - It's an evolution of the Adventure line: smoother, stronger, faster, more comfortable. The 1190 felt more raw, while the 1290 is more refined without being boring

I had my 1190 for 3 years and put some 25,000km on it, mostly in CZ, but a few long trips to France. I loved the bike, mostly because of how powerful and nimble it was; but, there was a price to pay.
The bike rocked back and forth during hard acceleration and braking; the motor was a bit clunky, especially during the low RPM; the protection against the weather was decent, but not great.

As soon as I sat and rode the 1290, I knew it was the bike for me. Thanks to the semi-active suspension, the bike doesn't rock; the motor is smooth and linear from the get go; and the widescreen and fuel tank provide the protection I was looking for on the long rides. The cruise-control is a new comfort feature to have, even if the controls look like they are stolen out of a 80's Skoda.

Considering the size of the bike and the added weight, you really don't feel difference. I guess it's the combination of the suspension and the motor.
I was hoping that I was going to ride a bit less aggressively on this thing, but it's the opposite: Again, I guess its thanks to the suspension: I feel more confident in the turns and the predictability and stability allow you to focus on the turn / ride.

The new flat, wider seat isn't much more comfortable than the gel seat I had on the 1290, but one thing it doesn't allow me to do, is to get my leg on the ground more easier during stops.

I have riden the new GS, I do know that it's more refined & comfortable (better seat, better kickstand, better control ergonomics), but, if you are in your 30's, 40's, or like to "race", than the KTM is definitely for you.

Update: after 4 long years it came time to say goodbye. The "spirited" nature of the beast just becaming tiring. Now I'm ready for something more comfortable, forgiving, and a machine that will pamper me. When I want to have fun, the Duke 690R will be there for me.
